We are absolutely loving having our brand new kitchen up and running at Springfield Gardens! The kitchen fills the school with the smell of baking and it’s not unusual to see students and staff following their noses down the corridor and through the big glass door to discover what we’ve been cooking up! We’ve wasted no time opening up our fantastic Move Well Eat Well space to our families with special morning and afternoon teas catered for by our Move Well Eat Well students, such as the Book Week Parade & Morning Tea, the official school opening and a Father’s Day breakfast to celebrate our Springfield dad’s. It’s been so great seeing our students take ownership of the kitchen space and be active and proud members of the kitchen team.
Last term also saw the 5/6’s head off on an excursion to Wrest Point for the day. Students were engaged in all learning activities throughout the day and it was great to see students really thinking about what it meant to work at a place like Wrest Point and even the steps it would take for them to be able to achieve it themselves. The team at Federal Group (Hannah Martin and Chef Andre especially) went out of their way to make the day a fun, interesting, engaging and exciting experience—encouraging students to try new foods and surprise themselves with what they may discover when they do. So many of our Move Well Eat Well messages were reiterated by the Wrest Point team in an authentic way, which was great for students to see in practice. It was also really great seeing the kids sharing what they had learned so far in Move Well Eat Well about eating a variety of coloured fruits and vegetables and utilising seasonal produce in our cooking. Students got to taste a wide variety of fantastic food throughout the day and the feedback was all overwhelmingly positive, with students asking me if we could make the pumpkin waffles they had had for dessert back in our kitchen (I certainly plan on doing so—they were amazing!) Best of all, all students were given their own mini recipe book with a copy of all the food they had been served throughout the day. It was a big, busy day and such a great experience for our students. We were absolutely thrilled to have been part of it.
This term is going so fast in the lead-up to Christmas. Move Well Eat Well students catered for a special ‘thank you’ afternoon tea for our parent volunteers and helpers for all their hard work in our classrooms and school. Our 5/6 classes were also lucky enough to be part of the Sushi Challenge run by the Tasmanian Hospitality Association. Two ambassadors, Peter and Ash, visited our Move Well Eat Well kitchen to teach our 5/6’s how to make, assemble, plate-up and eat their very own sushi creations. It was an absolute blast and even the fussiest eaters were pleasantly surprised by the new flavour combinations. The next few weeks will see us starting our Christmas cooking. Students will make special Christmas treats to take home to share with their families and we will continue to enjoy each other’s company and collaboration in our awesome kitchen.
